Welcome to the Training and Presentations page of Duke University’s Office of Global Health and Safety. Our office is committed to promoting the health and safety of the Duke community while traveling abroad. Attending training and presentations can equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate health and safety challenges throughout your program.

Scheduled Training and Events

We regularly schedule general training and presentations throughout the year. To register for these events, select the desired event and follow the registration link. Each event, facilitated by experienced OGHS team members, covers essential health and safety topics.

Supporting Student Mental Health

Join us for an informative session focused on fostering student mental health during programs. During this session, participants will gain valuable insights into identifying signs of potential mental health concerns and acquiring practical skills for implementing effective interventions. By attending, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and tools to create a conducive environment that prioritizes the well-being of students throughout their program experiences. 

Compassionate Responses: Addressing Sexual Misconduct in Experiential Education Programs

This training session is designed to equip program directors with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively address sexual misconduct within their programs. Participants will gain insights into the unique challenges of addressing sexual misconduct in experiential education settings and explore best practices for creating a safe and inclusive environment for all participants. Upon completion of the training, program directors will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of addressing sexual misconduct, fostering a culture of safety, and promoting the well-being of all individuals involved in experiential education programs.

QPR Suicide Prevention Training

Join us for a virtual training session on QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Suicide Prevention. This evidence-based program is designed to help participants recognize the warning signs of suicide, offer hope, and connect individuals with appropriate resources. The training covers the common causes of suicidal behavior, how to identify verbal, behavioral, and situational warning signs, and practical steps for engaging in supportive conversations. Participants will also learn how to effectively question, persuade, and refer someone who may be at risk, as well as how to access available crisis resources.

Managing Challenging Student Interactions

This training session is tailored for program facilitators to enhance their skills in managing challenging student situations within the unique context of hands-on learning. This workshop offers practical strategies for addressing complexities that may arise during experiential activities, fostering a positive and constructive atmosphere. Through interactive discussions and case studies, participants will gain valuable insights into managing behavioral challenges, conflicts, and emotional dynamics in experiential settings.

Customized Training Programs

In addition to scheduled community training, OGHS offers customized training programs tailored to your group’s specific needs. Whether a faculty-led program, a student group, or a department planning an international trip, we can design a presentation that meets your unique requirements. The OGHS team can provide in-depth health and safety briefings, address cultural differences and norms, or prepare you for potential emergencies.

All Duke students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend scheduled training and presentations. Custom training events are reserved only for the participants designated by the requesting department.

The length of each event varies depending on the topic and format. Generally, training events last between 1-2 hours.
